like me
you say the world is innocent and true
you’ll see
the bird of paradise will fly away with you
there’s so many places i will take you
as your mind embraces what your eyes won’t find
i’ll cry for you
i’ll do anything you want me to
the final peace
with god’s release
you leave this world behind

i read
the letter that you wrote me long ago
i see the flowers in your garden
are all overgrown
the wonderful ways that wind around you
the beautiful days forever on my mind

i’ll cry for you
i’ll do anything you want me to
the final peace
with god’s release
you leave this world behind

The story behind the song …

I wrote these lyrics for my granddad whilst I was living in Paris. It was kind of cathartic, sitting outside a cafe on the warm summer evenings after work, drinking French beer and writing about my best friend.

He was the kindest person in the world and taught me many things about life, love, death, hope and despair. My grandmother was sick for 10 years and he never left her side. After she died he spent the rest of his life caring for other people but never found another soul mate.

His spirit lives on.
